Bristol City Council has exciting digital ambitions as part of its Digital Strategy 2022 – 2027, and in this brand new role you will be responsible for forming, managing and maintaining strong partnerships and commercial relationships that benefit our colleagues and citizens.

Working as part of the Digital Strategy and Transformation management team, you will lead a small team responsible for developing commercial and partnership strategies, maintaining great relationships with our commercial partners, overseeing a wide range of contracts and managing some directly and planning and delivering best-practice procurement activities. You’ll also play a key role in identifying and carefully prioritising innovation, funding and partnership opportunities across multiple business sectors.

With many financial pressures facing the council, you and your team will be part of a newly established service which helps us achieve our aims with less.

There is much exciting and challenging work to do. We have an £18m multi-year Digital Transformation Programme to deliver, a £25m commercial partnering arrangement, a complex and dispersed approach to third-party spend in need of taming, and a reputation for innovation and delivery to uphold.

We have major ambitions to drive and contribute to change across the council and its partners, including participating in large regional partnerships across public and health sectors. You’ll be at the heart of this, working alongside the Head of Digital Strategy and Transformation to help make it all happen.

To be effective in this role you will need as much ability and emphasis on softer skills - including communications, stakeholder management, negotiation, and effective influencing - as you will on technical knowledge.

You will need experience of leading a team as an inclusive and values-led manager. You will be well versed in procuring and managing IT and digital services, commercial negotiation, delivering large-scale procurement activity, and high-value contract management. This will require an eye for detail and highly tuned commercial skills, including the ability to act as an intelligent client to suppliers.

You will also need a head for strategy and to be able to see the big picture for the council and its partners beyond the day-to-day activities of your own team or department.
