Materials Scientist - Advanced Materials and Devices

The role

QinetiQ is currently recruiting a Materials Scientist to be based in Farnborough on a permanent basis.

We are seeking an experienced Materials Scientist for our Advanced Services and Products team. This role supports key innovation and technology programmes for Global R&D in the field of advanced materials and devices.

In this role, you will have responsibility to manage and conduct materials research in support of advanced materials systems including structural components, energy systems, sensors, electromagnetics and quantum. Moreover, you will work to identify opportunities, research new technologies and trends, explore disruptive technologies and evaluate their potential benefits for QinetiQ as well as setting up strategic R&D collaborations in the UK and globally across the world.

What will I be doing?

Support, lead and drive R&D initiatives/ projects by designing/ selecting advanced materials such as ceramics, metals, 2D materials, thin films, particles etc. from the initial concept stage to production. Projects are executed in-house and in collaboration with research institutions or suppliers. Furthermore the role may require assisting collaborators in optimising manufacture and processing.
Drive the development of new work and research opportunities and generation of new business.
Set-up and maintain strategic R&D collaborations supporting key QinetiQ technology development initiatives.
Evaluate and test new materials and technology concepts at QinetiQ's laboratories and when necessary at 3rd party labs and facilities. This involves component performance tests and material characterisation evaluation using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM, FTIR and XRD among others).
Support to projects as industrial supervisor, set up strategic QinetiQ R&D initiatives in collaboration with partners.
Specify and lead the expansion of advanced materials characterisation and manufacture capabilities at QinetiQ.

Required Skills and Experience

PhD in Materials Science/ Chemistry or related field with demonstrable high-level R&D experience
Experience in manufacturing processes at scale
Experience in initiating and managing collaborative R&D projects
Strong knowledge in materials science and materials development, design and discovery
Strong application knowledge and understanding of exploitation opportunities for various materials
Bid and proposal writing
Working knowledge/ experience with advanced characterisation and test equipment
Proficiency in generating detailed technical reports including but not limited to, materials process analysis, mechanical and physical property analysis at both molecular and macro-level.
Liaising with both internal and external customers will be very important and therefore strong communication skills are essential including verbal, written and formal presentations.
Computer literate, Windows, Office etc

Beneficial Experience:

Working knowledge in Design of Experiment (DoE) to accelerate materials development programmes.
Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
Able to adopt a pro-active and flexible approach to work that allows the candidate to work independently as well as part of a team (leader or contributor)
