Head of Commercial Operations

London, Buckinghamshire and/or Cheltenham + remote working

Salary: £96,994 - £97,943 dependent on location

Permanent or Fixed Term Contract 2yrs + 1yr

Help shape a world class commercial operation for the UK’s intelligence community.

At MI5, MI6 and GCHQ, we work together to keep the UK safe. We work closely as partners in the intelligence community to safeguard Britain’s people and interests from various threats including cyber-attacks, espionage, terrorism, and organised crime. The Head of Commercial Operations reports directly into the Commercial Director and sits within the Commercial function which forms part of Shared Corporate Services. This function aims to provide high quality, customer focused procurement, purchasing and sourcing services. In this role, you’ll be responsible for providing a leading-edge function to the wider Commercial team and UK’s intelligence community.

You’ll be driving the transformation of the commercial function along with the Commercial Director to create a data driven, well governed and first-class operation. You will follow the Commercial Continuous Improvement Assessment Framework (CCIAF) as set by the Government Commercial Operating Standards.

This is an opportunity to transform the core elements of this function which includes designing the future target operating model and the implementation of a new Enterprise Resource Planning Tool, working towards single truth data intelligence. It’s as much about supporting people through a transformation journey as it is delivering new and improved processes and technology.

Your communication skills also mean that you can build rapport with a range of stakeholders that will help you to articulate a clear transformation pathway, promote collaborative working and influence real change. You’ll also enjoy finding different strengths within the teams and creating a culture where everyone feels valued and supported. All of this will help you to set a clear direction.

You don’t need to have a procurement qualification, but you will have likely led the operations of a commercial function responsible for category management similar to any other large complex organisation. A background in leading successful projects and programmes would be advantageous as well as a track record of delivering continuous improvement.

It’s an exciting role at a transformative time for the commercial function.

At MI5, MI6 and GCHQ diversity and inclusion are critical to our mission. To protect the UK, we need a truly diverse workforce that reflects the society we serve. This includes diversity in every sense of the word: those with different backgrounds, ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, ways of thinking and those with disabilities or neurodiverse conditions. We therefore welcome and encourage applications from everyone, including those from groups that are under-represented in our workforce.

To be eligible to apply, you must be a British Citizen. One of your parents must be a British Citizen or must have one of the nationalities or citizenships from one of the following: British Overseas Territory, British Subject, British National (Overseas), British Overseas Citizen, British Protected Person, citizenship of a country in the Commonwealth, citizenship of a country in the European Economic Area (EEA), or citizenship of the United States of America (USA). If deceased, they should have had such citizenship or nationality before death. If you hold dual nationality, of which one component is British, you will nonetheless be considered. If successful, you will not normally be required to give up your non-British citizenship but, as a condition of your employment or secondment, MI5, MI6 and GCHQ  may impose restrictions on your postings, work travel and/or general use of that nationality. Candidates must normally have been resident in the UK for seven out of the last ten years. This is particularly important if you were born outside the UK. Each case will be carefully considered on its own facts. You can apply at the age of 17 years, if successful you will not be offered a start date prior to your 18th birthday.
