Transport Operations Manager

Hours: 40 hours per week, Sunday - Thursday, Sunday - Monday - 08:00-16:30, Tuesday - Thursday 06:00-14:30
Salary: £39,363 to £42,830 dependent on experience plus bonus scheme and applicable shift premium

About the role:

Reporting to the Central Transport Manager, you will oversee the operation on your shift as the manager in charge.

The overall aim of the Transport Operations Manager is to oversee the fast-paced and time critical transport operation and ensure the traffic operation runs smoothly, accurately and cost effectively 24 hours, 7 days per week. You will be responsible for ensuring that all legal regulations are met so that the company’s ability to carry out its business is not affected. The Transport Operations Manager will have a sound knowledge of Road Transport Regulations and manage all activities to ensure compliance. As the ‘go-to’ person in transport, you will be responsible for working with internal warehouse customers to ensure on-time departures and load efficiency of the fleet and respond to demand fluctuations without compromising customer satisfaction.

The role requires an effective people manager to drive performance by monitoring KPI’s and leading by example. You will be directly responsible for leading the day / night operation consisting of a large team of Transport Supervisors and around 200 Drivers and be equipped to deal with potentially complex people management issues. As the Senior Manager on your shift, you must be able to analyse information and make decisions calmly whilst working in a pressurised situation. The Transport Operations Manager will develop positive relationships with other members of the Management team, colleagues and wider business in order to drive excellence whilst ensuring a safe and productive working environment for all.

You will seek cost savings against budget where appropriate and manage yard activities in order to achieve the required high standards in all areas, driving a culture of positive change and continuous improvement.

About you:

You will be an experienced Transport Manager or Site Manager within a distribution or logistics environment and be able to demonstrate the ability to manage a large operation in a fast-paced environment. You will possess excellent people management skills, having proven ability to manage complex employment related issues and challenging situations, in addition to coaching and developing your team.

The successful candidate must possess a sound knowledge of Road Transport Regulations and be a national CPC licence holder; you will be the person responsible for ensuring that ‘O’ Licence requirements are adhered to so this knowledge and experience is a requirement. You will have strong experience in managing teams of 15+ people and have worked in a similar position within a retail and / or distribution environment and possess a good standard of education - minimum GCSE’s (or equivalent) in Maths and English.
