An award-winning Civil Engineering company that have proudly worked on some of the most prestigious engineering projects across London and Home Counties.

This company is now looking for an experienced Operations Director from the Groundworks, Civils, RC Frames background to join their senior management team.

The Operations Director will be responsible for a growing capability within the business providing both standalone civil and structures solutions for their clients and facilitating broader integrated solutions through the business. Active in the implementation of a sustainable, long-term strategy. Also instrumental in identifying and securing new business opportunities, in conjunction with Pre-Construction colleagues, and building on existing relationships to give their clients what they have committed to and secure repeat works.

To direct and oversee safe delivery of projects, in accordance with company procedures and best practice guidance, to underpin the successful planning, developing, monitoring, designing, tendering and implementation of projects to the agreed targets and clients’ satisfaction, delivering the projects to time, cost and quality; and through this to contribute to the achievement of the Company’s strategic objectives, and to curate information to allow accurate forecasting and decision making. To ensure that job specific activities do not introduce unacceptable business and safety risks to any aspect of the company operation, or the staff therein, and to ensure that the appropriate policies and procedures are implemented and adhered to, in particular the Health and Safety policy. To strike a balance between leadership, operational expertise, strategic emphasis and senior level stakeholder engagement.

The role of Operations Director involves the following tasks.

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure a 'Safety First’ approach.
  • Manage areas of responsibility in line with the overhead budget.
  • Deliver profitability.
  • Engage and lead the business planning implementation and forecasting within your business unit.
  • Proactively manage client and industry relationships to further develop and enhance the company’s reputation within the industry.
  • Develop and mentor staff for future leadership roles.
  • Actively promote and ensure good governance across the business unit and projects.
  • Manage the allocation of resources of the Company, including in conjunction with HR, recruitment and retention.
  • Ensure that robust procedures exist for management of projects during the development and implementation phases, and that procedures accord with best practice, standards and any applicable regulations.
  • Act as principal client contact on all aspects of the project during the delivery phase. Develop and maintain effective client relationships, monitor client satisfaction levels and respond urgently to any client concerns and ensure improvement plans are developed, implemented and progress against plans is shared with clients.
  • Manage and pro-actively engage in mitigating risks to the Company across the project portfolio, support contractual performance and total project delivery through the project management team, including anticipating problems and developing actions plans.
  • Project Life Cycle management.
  • Ensure each project has developed, completed and keeps up to date plans for health, safety, quality and environment. Instigate specific risk assessments (health, safety and environment) where required, review results and ensure any actions arising are completed.
  • Ensure that projects comply fully with all statutory and regulatory provisions including the CDM Regulations.
  • Ensure project change control procedures are established and adhered to and reported to the client in a timely and effective manner so as to minimise impact on project delivery.
  • Regularly review project income to the Company and costs to the Client, ensuring any discrepancies are resolved.
  • Oversee tender adjudications and programme reviews.
  • Prepare project management team resource forecasts for inclusion in the Business Plan.
  • Work closely with the Pre-Construction team to ensure the business unit meets the required level of workload, and provide the link from pre-construction into delivery.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE

  • Relevant Degree or HNC.
  • Chartered Civil Engineer would be desirable.
  • 15+ years’ experience within contracting organisations, including 4+ years in a senior management role leading a portfolio of projects or a major project.
  • Significant experience of working within a direct delivery model contractor.
  • Construction experience across more than one of the following: deep/major basement construction, earthworks & groundworks, temporary works, RC Frames, Piling, Civil Engineering and tunnelling.
  • Good reputation within the London construction market.
  • Demonstrable commercial acumen and a track record of pre-construction and client engagement, project procurement and project execution.
  • Strong leadership skills and technical capability.
  • Director level experience managing P&L of a business unit, with a good understanding of business planning and budgeting is desirable.
  • Experience of major projects in the UK or internationally is an advantage.
  • Experience of demolition and/or remediation would be desirable.
