Transport Manager - Chester and Shrewsbury

Royal Mail Logistics are looking for a Traffic Office Manager in Chester. You’ll be responsible for the management of the transport and distribution operations for Chester, Shrewsbury and our North West Distribution Centre.


Reporting to the Distribution Manager you’ll be accountable for leading and motivating your team, approx. 30 direct reports, to create high performance and commitment alongside ensuring the work plan is achieved through managing pipeline interfaces.

About the role

A key accountability of the role is ensuring safe and legal operations, including maintaining and monitoring all aspects of the fleet Operators Licence in line with business policy.


Ensuring compliance to Road Transport Directive legislation and EU hours regulations, by optimisation of data in the open options and CDU software packages, you’ll also co-ordinate planned and non-planned maintenance of vehicles, in liaison with Service Centre using.


As an inspirational leader, you will motivate your team to achieve work plan and scorecard targets, all with a focus on continuous improvement. Utilising your first-rate change management experience, you’ll demonstrate the use of Continuous Improvement tools and techniques in performance improvement across a balanced scorecard.


By holding regular development meetings with staff, you’ll identify areas for improvement and implement development plans where required. Owning the shift Manpower Plan, holding weekly resourcing meeting to ensure all duties are resourced as efficiently as possible, is a requirement alongside ensuring that robust plans are in place for Special Events and Christmas Peak.

You’ll proactively manage the pipeline interfaces on and between shifts, providing daily shift reporting to your Distribution Manager, whilst being responsible for measurement and display of key metrics anaylsing these to address improvement actions including high impact duties to achieve move to time targets.

Shift Times – Working across all shift patterns with predominantly day shifts to support this 24/7 operation.

About you

It takes more than organisational skills to be a manager. We’re looking for individuals with a passion for people.

You’ll provide coaching and advice, while keeping the whole operation running smoothly. Your experience might be within mail, retail, FMCG or logistics but your ability to motivate, inspire and lead is what we’re looking for.

You’ll have an eye for detail and be confident in efficiently managing resources and budgets – all with a view to ensuring your team is working at its very best.


Candidates should hold a Certificate of Professional Competence or be prepared to study for and attain within 12 months. With knowledge of safety and legal requirements, including drivers’ hours legislation, you’ll be experienced within vehicle checks, Safe Systems of Work, risk assessments and accident investigation.
