We’re currently looking for an experienced Category Manager to deliver value for money through our clients supply chain; recognising and balancing potential risk factors from sourcing, through contract management and exit.

The Category Manager will provide professional guidance and advice to commercial/contract managers throughout the organisation; with particular emphasis on strategic activities. You’ll also have a hands-on approach and will lead on Commercial ‘Best Practice’.

Our ideal candidate will be a Member of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply Management (CIPS) or equivalent or working towards full membership. You’ll have a good practical understanding of insourcing/outsourcing, an in-depth knowledge of commercial theory and practice with a thorough understanding of commercial models is essential. Main duties of the job:

  • To support the development of commercial strategy and implement agreed strategy
  • To continuously improve the commercial framework.This ‘Best Practice’ approach will provide consistent, practical guidance for commercial/contract managers and will ensure we approach the supply chain with one voice.
  • To evaluate, recommend and support the implementation of contract management and sourcing tools
  • To provide professional commercial input on procurement processes; in particular, with ITTs and evaluation modelling.
  • Responsible for sourcing activity, both strategic and tactical, pan-organisation. This also includes mini competition call-offs.
  • To provide timely and professional input into stakeholder business cases. This may entail industry reviews, benchmarking etc. 
  • The Commercial Manager will provide robust challenge, as necessary, to ensure the ‘Intelligent Client’ principles prevail. 
  • To monitor standards and ensure compliance. 
  • Further, to play an active role in ensuring that strategic supplier MI is presented to senior management to ensure that we have senior input into strategic supply chain matters e.g. insourcing/outsourcing.

Person Specification:

  • Graduate level qualification (preferably in a business related discipline)
  • Member of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply Management (CIPS) or part qualified e.g. Level 4
  • Experience of the Public Procurement Regulations.
  • Able to clearly articulate to non-procurement colleagues and apply pragmatically.
  • Good practical understanding of insourcing/outsourcing. Able to demonstrate activities/projects undertaken in this field.
  • Highly numerate
  • Strong negotiator capable of leading senior level discussions.  Able to reference.
  • Well-developed influencing skills; capable of affecting key decision makers.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; is clear, concise and relevant.
  • Skilled negotiator
  • Proficient with Management Information tools e.g. ERP, D&B reports
